How to Use Distant Horizons: First Setup and LOD Generation
Distant Horizons does not instantly turn every unexplored area into full-detail terrain. It renders simplified LOD data and needs time, chunks, CPU, storage, and suitable settings to build the distant world.
Common symptoms
- you installed DH but see no distant terrain
- the horizon is empty in a new world
- you are unsure which distance setting matters
- generation causes temporary stutter
Step-by-step fix
Launch a clean profile first
Confirm that Minecraft starts with the loader, required API, and Distant Horizons before adding shaders or a large modpack.
Set a moderate vanilla distance
Start around 8–12 full-detail chunks and let DH handle the simplified terrain beyond that range.
Choose a conservative LOD distance
Begin around 64–128 chunks, wait for generation, and increase distance gradually as the profile proves stable.
Explore steadily
Walk or fly through an area and allow the generator to catch up. Constantly moving into new terrain creates a large queue.
Add shaders last
Once the base profile works, choose a shader with documented DH integration and test it separately.
